The Story of Dark Women
A Sudanese model Nyakim Gatwech, has become an international sensation today in spite of her sheer black dark skin. She was bullied and harassed for her dark skin colour for years when she grew up but, this girl is an ideal. She never stopped loving herself and never let her self- confidence go away or doom herself.
Well, talking of her complexion, she is so dark that people loath and criticize her. People who are ignorant about others aren’t ashamed of criticizing them, even about someone’s skin colour and body shape. Nyakim was 24 years old when she first made her headlines after she revealed that an Uber driver had offered her $10,000 to bleach her skin, emphasizing that her complexion was something to be ashamed of. While most of us would be enraged and hurt at this, Gatwech just laughed the comment off.
Surprisingly, she later shared on Instagram that “Why on Earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God blessed me with! You won’t believe the kind of questions I get and the kind of looks I get for having this skin”
Well, not only she is proud of her skin and her body, but also of her country South Sudan, where people are so dark that you won’t believe in your eyes. The people there, not only have a skin rich in melanin but even beautiful and white sparkling teeth.
After her post on Instagram, Gatwech was dubbed as the “Queen of Dark”. Amazingly, this model loves that name and feels that there is nothing wrong in darkness and moreover being called Queen is cherry on the top for her.
She wrote to her 1,90,000 followers on Insta that “Black is not a colour of sadness or death or evil. Its just the way it’s has been portrayed for so many years. So, I am the queen of the dark who brings light and love to those around me.”
Gatwech, being a model, is efficiently using her platform to preach self-love and self-acceptance and thus redefines conventional beauty ideals with her dark skin. With her stunning modelling shots, the Sudanese model is proving that black is definitely beautiful.
Her beautiful posts on Instagram are quite inspiring. She wrote on day “My ebony skin stays glowing. I am black without apology”.
She even captioned one of her pictures on insta that “We have come a long way and have a long way to go. My hope is that this post can remind you every day of why you should be proud of your melanin. Why you should be proud of your heritage, regardless of how light or dark your skin is. Stop comparing your skin to anyone. Change can only happen once you can truthfully look in the mirror and love that Deep Chocolate, Cinnamon, Mocha or Caramel complexion.”
All over the world, we would find numerous black people, but in certain places, such as India, tanned or black skin is loathed due to prejudices and biases. That’s why her, positive attitude for her complexion is extremely empowering and inspiring. She doesn’t care what haters say.
She is a role model, because we need to learn from her how to be confident about her skin or body type. We should be contended with what we have been blessed with and should not be sad or demotivated by getting indulged in the societal prejudices.
